Morris County- Tourne County Park Update

First the good news. Last year JORBA obtained permission for a trail improvement project at the Tourne County Park in Boonton NJ. This involved a new section of the red trail that incorporates switchbacks as an alternate to the eroded fall line that gets wider and deeper by the year. We flagged a proposed route, captured a GPS track and provided this along with maps to the MCPC. It is currently under review. There has not been many trail improvements to the park in several years, and this would be among the first led by JORBA.

Warren County Trails

For those of our members who reside in Warren County, we encourage you to attend this special event at one of the county parks. If you want more riding opportunities in your area, make sure you speak with representatives of the Warren County Board of Recreation Commissioners (BORC). Let them know you are also a JORBA member!

Recreational Trails Program at Risk

While at least a portion of the funds for 2013 grants were appropriated, the NJDEP has reassigned those who administered the program. As a result, unless personnel are assigned back to the program, 2013 grants and 2014 grants are at risk. JORBA is responding to this concern on behalf of the trail user community.

Trail Maintenance at the Tourne 10/5/13

JORBA is pleased to announce trail maintenance at the Tourne County park this Saturday 10/5/13.

We will begin this effort by walking some of the trails and addressing the widening and braiding that has been occurring. As needed, we may also incorporate some erosion control measures. This is a great opportunity for local riders to help us identify future projects to improve the sustainability and quality of the trail network.

When: 10/5/13 at 9am

Morris County - Tourne County Park

As identified in the meeting minutes from the Morris County Park Commission ( MCPC), off road cycling in the Tourne was being perceived as having a negative impact. The quoted excerpt from the minutes is as follows: "Acknowledging that off‐road bicycling is beginning to have a negative effect on the trails at the Tourne County Park" ( refer to the link below). The fact that this statement was recorded indicates that there was a unanimous agreement within the committee.

Chester Twp Trail Project

We got a great start to our trail building at the Chester Parker Road location last week: on Monday four of us (Jesse & Julian Shaun and I) braved the rain and completed about 20 yards of trail with a few sections of armoring; on Tuesday Bob and I cut approximately 170 yards of trail with the Ditch Witch. Our standard TM time for the remainder of the summer will be 4-8pm on Mondays, so of course we'll be back out there tomorrow; our goal for tomorrow will be to complete 'polishing' the section of trail we built with the ditch witch, and to continue building trails by hand.
