Stanhope, New Jersey: JORBA (Jersey Off Road Bicycling Association) held its First Annual Bike Festival, A Celebration of New Jersey Mountain Biking, at the Waterloo Village Concert Field in Stanhope on Saturday. The event, unique to New Jersey, drew 1000 people to Waterloo and raised over five thousand dollars for the non-profit organization. Mountain biking and its healthy lifestyle are alive and well in New Jersey!

Over 500 participants were treated with guided rides through Allamuchy, Deer Park and Stephens State Parks, showcasing the trails that JORBA stewards in the area. Rides were held for all ages and skill levels with unprecedented participation in the kids and women’s rides. Though the rides took center stage, there were also an incredible amount of activities for the entire family. Internationally famous professional rider and local hero Jeff Lenosky performed his stunt show to huge crowds twice during the day. Pat “The Human Vise” Povilaitus performed his amazing feats of strength and courage which left kids and adults in awe. The “Cyclecraft Skinny Contest”, where participants ride over incredibly narrow pieces of wood, drew riders from 4 years old and up. “Marty’s Reliable Surly Karate Monkey Mania” was a hit among singlespeeders, and the Cycleworks Skills Clinics taught over 100 riders, from the newest rider to seasoned vets, how to navigate various obstacles while trail riding and how to safely control thebicycle.

Sponsors displayed the latest and greatest bikes and gear from top manufacturers and a rare chance to demo bikes on the trails. JORBA’s member chapters displayed information and photos from across the state showing the vast amount of trails that JORBA maintains and the advocacy efforts that promote access to trails for all trail users and sustainable trail building. Music rocked through the day from local bands Eleven-Ten and Rockets Red Glare, enhancing the festival atmosphere. The day ended with a massive raffle featuring bikes, clothing, gear and sporting goods for many happy winners.
