Jersey Off Road Bicycle Association Announces Tuesday Night Beginner Rides

June 30, 2009 - November 24, 2009
Every Tuesday at 6pm.

The Allaire Trail Users Group, local chapter of the Jersey Off Road Bicycle Association (JORBA), encourages mountain bikers of all levels to join the Tuesday night beginner group rides at Allaire State Park. Weather permitting, riders gather at the Hospital Road lot at 6pm, every Tuesday. The Tuesday night beginner rides, now in its third year, attract riders of all levels ”from first timers to seasoned racers" and introduces others to the sport of mountain biking at a social pace and in a fun and relaxed atmosphere.

JORBA president Frank Harms is dedicated to off road biking and shares his passion with beginners. Harms, who is also the crew leader of the Allaire Trail Users Group (comprised of local volunteer hikers, equestrians, cyclists, and trail runners)reports that nearly 40 riders turn out on any given Tuesday night. The rides have become so well attended that word has spread to riders from Newark, Princeton, Monmouth Junction, South Amboy, and as far away as Delaware on occasion. According to Harms, "These rides were a huge success last year so it was only a matter of time (daylight actually) before we started them again. This ride is for all levels but caters to the beginner who may not be the greatest rider. This is for them. So, bring a friend, the Mrs. (or Mr.) and have a great time. There are always coaches mixed into the group so riders can pick up some new skills along the way." As both an educational and charitable entity, JORBA encourages volunteerism and responsibility, and advocates off road cycling as a healthy, environmentally sound, and sustainable activity, while protecting and promoting the rights and responsibilities of cyclists as equal members of the trail user community.

Local JORBA chapters organize volunteer work groups for conservation, development and maintenance of trails. In 2008, local chapters recorded over 5500 volunteer hours of trail maintenance and this year is already outpacing 2008. The beginner rides at Allaire and other chapters are designed to not only educate beginners how to ride safely but also to encourage responsible use of the trails—the back-bone of JORBA’s mission.
